First you see it being created on its plexiglas plate, and then you see it take off. Note that it flips!

Robert Rauschenberg's transfer drawings

"The transfer technique, which he took up in 1958, had remarkably few moving parts. It involved soaking newspaper or magazine clippings in solvent, laying them face down on drawing paper and then hatching back and forth across them with a dry pen nib. The results dazzle; in a flickering, almost strobelike effect, images seem to rise to the surface like memories through a scrim — or through the static of a television set. The critic Lawrence Alloway likened the fluctuating motifs to “a postcard stand in a windstorm.”

I am getting ready today for a workshop, with my 7 Plus artist friends, taught by Annie Stromquist. The first day will be spent learning how to make transfer drawings. They seem mysterious to me!

On this warm summer evening we enjoyed black cod with eggplant parmesan - actually the cheese is Cypress Grove's Black rind hard goat's cheese - while listening to Les Scher's surperb and perpetual jazz show, "Lester Leaps in" on KMUD. It doesn't get much better!

Cleaning the brayers and scrapers used for monotyping creates interesting patterns. Here's a bit of brayerart. And a happy face at the much used sink, after hours satisfying printmaking.

Learning indirectly from Jenny Robinson, artist and printmaker

Patricia Sennott participated in an intensive printmaking workshop with Jenny Robinson (see her website) at the Kala Institute in Berkeley this summer. She brought back an interesting technique that combines monotype with etching. Here's a piece I just made.

Guerilla marketing outside the Morris Graves on Arts!Alive Aug. 1, 2009

These two characters were picketing artist Nicole (what's her last name?) outside the Graves. I think Nicole won first price for her Image of water in the exhibit with that name. See previous post for dates and time.
